4x4 TOUR ITINERARY FROM AREQUIPA TO COLCA CANYON AND CUSCO
DAY 1: AREQUIPA - EL PEDREGAL - HUAMBO - CABANACONDE
At 7AM pick from your hotel and departure to the Colca canyon in our private 4WD – First we leaves Arequipa by the Pan American highway to see the north part of Desierto de Atacama which is part of dries region of Arequipa, the desert look impressive as lunar valley making big contrast with high snowcap´s on the background – One of the first valley we pass will be La Joya (The Jewel), the name comes thanks to the rich soil to produce many kind of agricultural products in the middle of the desert – The next valley is name Valle de Vitor which is irrigated by the waters of Arequipa River as known as rio Chili, this valley is very fertile to produce different kind of grapes to produce good quality of wine and Pisco (grape brandy) which is the national drink of Peru – Continue driving along the highway across the desert showing us some little dunes next of the route we arrive to another valley in middle of the desert as known as El Pedregal (Alto Siguas - 1500m), this places exist there since 80´s thanks one biggest irrigation project supported by the Peruvian government – Today El Pedregal produce lot agriculture and livestock to import vegetables and dairy products to major markets of Peru.
From 1500m we start to ascend following an unpaved road to Andes of Arequipa – Again the geography offer rare and nice contrast of land as small rivers, canyons, cactus forest and steep mountains and different ecological floors make us to feel the altitude – The encounter between the last part of the desert and mountains show us little valley named Huacan with lot terraces from Wary period (Pre Inca culture) but almost destroyed by heavy rain and pass of the time – After 4 hours driving you will be on the Altiplano (flat plateau) which is very different terrain if we compare with the desert of the coast – This part of the tour offer impressive view of mountains as Ampato (6310) where in 1995, during an ascent of Mt. Ampato, the anthropologist Johan Reinhard found Momia Juanita ("Mummy Juanita"), better known in English "The Ice Maiden", is a 15th century Inca mummy of a 12- to 14-year-old girld who died sometime between 1440 and 1450 – From the highest pass (4300m) we can see the majestic and vertical walls of the Colca canyon and of course we have the privilege to be the only tourists in these places on this route thanks to the poor experience of other tour operators, tour guides and drivers.
Descend to Huambo town (3200m) and short explore countryside surrounded by pre Inca terraces and huge mountains complete cover by wild flora.
At 1PM arrive to Cabanaconde (3280m) to have lunch and lodging. Late afternoon we go for short trek to Mirador de Achachigua, nice lookout of the Colca canyon and villages located on the left bank of the canyon. Stay at hotel Kuntur Wasi or similar – The hotel offer nice rooms build with local material and big windows to get nice view of the mountain and the canyon, also the hotel have wifi facilities, free coca tea and nice bar to get your Colca sour (L - D).
TIP: Today you must be prepare to experience summer weather from the cost and winter weather up on the Andes – 7 hours of drive in good road and then on gravel and bumpy road making many stops for pictures and to use toilet.
DAY 2: CABANACONDE - CONDOR CROSS - PINCHOLLO - CHIVAY - HOT SPRING - SIBAYO HOMESTAY
At 6AM we will have buffet country breakfast and transfer to outside of the town and go for 2 hours of easy trekking along the canyon following nice trail with chance to appreciate condors flying the second deepest canyon in the world. Around 8:30AM arrive to the Condor Cross viewpoint and wait for the Condors flights. Then we continue traveling on our 4x4 vehicle to Pinchollo, locate on the left bank of Colca River - We drive through small remote villages as Maca, Achoma and Yanque to seet colonial churches dated from Spanish conquest time and very picturesque main squares and friendly people walking around – Continue driving along the Colca valley we arrive to Chivay around 12PM - Chivay (3600m) is the most important town in all Colca valley thanks to infrastructure of hotels, restaurantes and handicraft markets – In this town you will have lunch included – Around 3PM transfer to the thermals pools of La Calera (45°C hot) to enjoy indoor or outdoor pools.
Around 4:30PM car transfer for about 40min. from Chivay to Sibayo homestay (upper zone of the canyon) - There you will spend the night with a local family, they will provide the dinner and rooms - This place is considered very remote town, with few inhabitants and located next of the Colca River - The families are very friendly and always ready to share with you their homes. DAY 3: SIBAYO - CONDOROMA DAM – SUYKUTAMBO TRES CAÑONES – ESPINAR - CUSCO
Today the breakfast will be at 5AM with the family and then aboard our transport and travel following a gravel road up to the highest point as known as "Paso Condoroma" (4870M), from we can see the source of the Colca canyon – Nice morning and scenery of the Andes between Arequipa and Cusco, driving through rivers, lakes, mountains, some houses of shapers and enjoying undiscovered route and after 4 hours we arrive to another recently discover tourist attractions name Tres Cañones de Suykutambo (4000m), this is a beautiful natural marvel located in Suykutambo district in the province of Espinar of Cusco region.
Tres Cañones view point is a great vantage point to witness the magnificent work that cost thousands of years nature – The impressive and massive rock formation of each canyon offer great view to see anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures in different positions from different angle – After 2 hours of exploring this places we drive to Espinar (3940m) known for its great potential mining (gold & copper) and livestock production – At this town we will have late lunch and then continue driving on paved road to Cusco – The second pass for today will be paso Langui (4300m) and nice view of the Langui lake and from there we do again off-road to discover 5 lakes more next of the road – After 1 hour of off-road we find nice asphalt road to Cusco (3500m) – The tour end in your hotel of Cusco around 6PM (B - L).

11 - Is recommended to bring enough cash in local currency (peruvian soles) - In the canyon and on the way to Cusco is not easy to find a place to change US dollars to Soles or use credit cards to pay your expenses.
12 - This trip includes to visit very remote Andean villages where we can see local shepherds and do not have the habit of interacting with tourists, so we recommend to ask them FIRST before you take pictures of them or their customs / traditions, animals as Llamas/Alpacas otherwise they can be unhappy.
