The Colca Canyon is located on the southern Peru in the Andes mountain range exist the second deepest canyon in the world, It is more than twice as deep as the Apurimac Canyon (Peru) and the Grand Canyon in the United States, the canyon's walls are not as vertical as those of the Grand Canyon. The Colca River birth in the Andes between Condoroma and Crucero Alto (above 4500-5000M), drops the water down to Pacific Ocean, this river have 4 names as Colca River, Andamayo River, Majes River and finally Camana River. The Colca Canyon register hard rain during December to April and the rest of the year is dry, sunny and cold weather.
The deepest part of the Colca Canyon is register between Ampato Mountain (6310M) and Coropuna snow-capped (6377M), on the left bank of the canyon exist a small town named Huambo and straight down of this town is located Cancco Valley (1720M) which is the greatest deep point that reaches a depth of 4590 meters.
The name Colca refers to small holes in the cliffs in the valley and canyon. These holes were used in Inca and pre-Inca times to store food, such as potatoes and other Andean crops. They were also used as tombs for important people.
The geography of the Colca Canyon are habitable, and Inca and pre-Inca terraces are still cultivated along the less precipitous canyon walls; they build stepped terraces to cultivate the ancestral potatoes, maize and other products of this region. The Colca Valley is a wonderful and colorful Andean valley with many small and remotes towns on the both side of the Canyon founded by Spanish conquers. The Spanish introduce and change many ancestral traditions as the religion. The Colca Valley keeps many colonial richest churches in all Arequipa regions.
The canyon is home of the Andean Condor (Vultur Gryphus), they are can be seen at fairly close range as they fly through the precipices. UPPER AND LOWER REGION COLCA CANYON TOUR ITINERARY

DAY 1: AREQUIPA - PAMPAS CAÑAHUAS - SUMBAY CAVE PAINTINS - CALLALLY ROCK FORMATION - UPPER COLCA CANYON REGION

Around 7AM we will meet in your hotel of Arequipa and then start our daily private or shared guided tour to the second deepest canyon in the world, driving on the left side of Chachani mountain (6070M), continue going up to 4200M, where is a Natural Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca, is the nature habitat for the Vicuñas, one of South American camelidos, groups of Llamas, Alpacas, small wetlands as known as “Bofedales” – Then we take a narrow gravel road to the canyon of Sumbay – We hike downhill for about 20 minutes thru stone forest until the caves of Sumbay – Sumbay painting caves is located on the left side of the road, to get there we take we drive about half hour on gravel road to abandoned/ghost town of Sumbay.

Walk through nice rock formations and narrow rocky canyon until to the cave and finally you will find the rupestrian rock arts, these represent animals as Vicuñas, Llamas, Pumas, Ñandu - Also are figures of humans hunting and rare figures carved on the walls.
Around 11AM continue driving on the highlands seeing nice panorama of small lakes with wildlife as Andean birds – Arrive to the upper zone of Colca canyon as known as “Las Ventanas Del Colca” recognized as the main gate to the canyon – Spectacular view of the upper canyon, small remote villages as La Pulpera where the farmers produce dairy products – The next stop will be at Cuevas de Mollepunkub (near Callalli), this place is not really introduce to the tourism but the rock arts in the caves are well preserved and represent the domestication of South American camelids as Llamas, Alpacas and Vicuñas – The rock figures dating from the first hunters and gatherers populated in this region of the canyon probably about 12,000 years ago.
Las Ventas Del Colca
Another stop of this trip will be just next of the road to get nice pictures of huge walls as known as “Los Catillos Encantados”. Continue driving on gravel road we arrive to the farming and quiet town of Callalli (4000M) where is located a catholic church of San Pedro de Padua and this was built in 1573 by the first Spaniards arriving to this zone.
Around 2PM finally we arrive to the town of Sibayo (3820M) – This town is recognized Rumillacta (Stone Village) thanks to their house built with local material as river rocks used for the walls and for the roof of the houses, they use Ichu grass to kept warm inside the rooms. Late lunch will be served by local family – The local family also provides a room with hot shower and friendly atmosphere given us good time to discover their daily live living in contact with the mother earth (Pachamama).
OPTIONAL short nice walking around villages for artisanal trout fishing or visit a hanging tombs located on the upper part of Sibayo.

DAY 2: CALLALLY - SIBAYO - TUTI & CANOCOTA TREK - CHIVAY - COPORAQUE - LARI - CABANACONDE

Today at 7AM you will have delicious country breakfast prepared with Andean recipes – Then we say goodbye to family and drive from Sibayo to Tuti (3800M), this is a small village located on the right bank of the canyon surrounded by lot terracing – Around 8:30AM begin a nice trekking for about 4 hours following ancient Inca path next of Colca River – The trekking includes spectacular views of the upper part of the canyon.
Around 12:30PM arrive to hot spring of La Calera and enjoy the thermal pools for about one hour and then transfer to main town in canyon as known as Chivay (3640M) – Lunch is included in a typical restaurant.

Around 1PM begin nice drive and guided trip on the left bank of the canyon to visit small villages like Coporaque, it was the first Inca capital in all Colca valley during their territorial expansion to the south of today Peru.
The next places to stop along the way will be Ichupampa and Lary village where is located the biggest catholic church in the canyon – After 2 hours of driving on the left bank of the canyon we cross the river to right bank of the canyon – Around 4PM we will arrive to “Mirador Cruz Del Condor “ to enjoy the solitude and tranquility of this place without the presence of tourists, at this time some time is possible to watch Condors but some day not – Then transfer to hotel Kuntur Wassi located in Cabanaconde (3280M) – Diner will be served by restaurant of the hotel (B - L - D).
OPTIONAL 2 hours of trekking from Mirador Cruz Del Condor to Cabanaconde but only if time permit.

DAY 3: CABANACONDE - CONDOR CROSS LOOKOUT - HUAMBO - EL PEDREGAL - AREQUIPA

At 6AM is the breakfast and then half hour of transfer to Condor Cross lookout (2nd time), at this place is possible to appreciate the fly of Condors or sometimes seating on the big rocks, two hours spending looking this amazing and biggest bird in the world, also there are many villages at the deep part of this spectacular Canyon.

After 2 hours at this impressive place, we drive back to Cabanaconde and then we drive up on a serpentine road - The views beckon us to make several photographic stops because it's hard to imagine that what's to come can quite match the current scene. The magnificent views continue for the next as we make our way to Huambo (2900M), a village surrounded by green terraces, a lovely town square, and a different group of people (do you know their ethnic identity?) wearing different local dress. At the highest point of our journey in the Andean range, at the "Mirador del Ampato" we have a good view of the Ampato, a snow-covered mountain. In 1995 the mummy of 14 years old "Juanita" was found by climbers. We continue on to see two small volcanoes in the vast Pampa de Qerqe (whose summit is only 300M). We travel down to the coast till the Pan-American highway to Arequipa - Normally we arrive to hotel around 6PM and end of service (B - L).

DEPARTURES

Daily departures are available between April to November (dry season). During the raining season we don't really reommend because on the upper region of the canyon the rain is so hard.
